Macular degeneration is a dreaded term as it is a common cause of blindness in the United States. Macular degeneration can ruin reading and central vision because it destroys the most sensitive part of the retina known as the macula. It typically occurs in elderly patients, but it can also develop in younger patients (especially those with a strong family history). People can reduce their risk of vision loss from macular degeneration by reducing the amount of UV rays entering the eye and by consuming a diet rich in anti-oxidants and other nutrients. Smoking worsens the course of the disease. It is important for patients at risk, including those 60 years old or greater or with a strong family history, to have a comprehensive ophthalmic exam every year.
